On March 31, GambleAware officially ceased operations after more than 20 years of activity
Since 2018, the organization has been the main body for the treatment, prevention, and research of gambling harm in the UK.
The closure of the project was announced back in 2025, linked to the reform of gambling legislation. According to these reforms, all matters related to the prevention and treatment of gambling harm will now fall under the jurisdiction of government bodies. Thus, government authorities will replace the existing model based on private charitable organizations.
To fund this work, a mandatory contribution from operators has been introduced — from 0.1% to 1.1% of GGR. The collected funds will be directed towards research, prevention, and treatment of gambling addiction.
There is no consensus in the market regarding the reasons for the closure. Many believe that the authorities have long disliked the system where money for combating gambling addiction goes to private organizations, and therefore it was decided to redirect this financial flow in the right direction at the legislative level.
On July 13, a regulated market will launch in Alberta (Canada). 55 operators, including FanDuel and Caesars, have already expressed interest in the gambling license.
