A judicial investigation in the UK, concluded on March 17,found that the operator Bet365 failed to identify signs of problematic gambling behavior in 19-year-old student Arthur Soames, who took his own life in May 2022. Bet365 sent Soames over 80 marketing messages, including offers for free bets, while the operator’s intervention was limited to just one automated email in February 2022.
An expert review confirmed that Soames’s behavior showed multiple warning signs starting in December 2021, including late-night sessions and increased betting volume. The UK regulator UKGC completed the account review back in June 2025, identifying discrepancies in Bet365’s actions, but did not inform either the operator or Soames’s family of the results. The court expressed its intention to send a report to the UKGC on preventing similar incidents in the future.
In Spain, investment funds have put the gambling holding Codere up for sale, valued at around €2 billion. The process is in its early stages, with bids expected by mid-May.
