SEO Affiliate in Romania Faces Criminal Charges for Promoting Illegal Gambling Operators
The gambling regulator of Romania (ONJN) has approached the prosecutor’s office with a request to initiate a criminal case against an SEO affiliate operating under the ONJN affiliate license.
The affiliate segmented users on its website by IP, devices, time of day visiting the site, and other parameters to show some users only licensed operators in the country, while others were shown offshore operators.
This is a fairly standard practice to evade the attention of regulators in various jurisdictions; the issue here is that the affiliate was operating under the ONJN affiliate license. The agency knows everything about it.
However, the specific domain of the site is not mentioned in the regulator’s press release; it is noted that one of the main advertisers of its offshore part was the operator NV Casino, which does not have a license in the country.
For such a crime, the affiliate faces at least a fine, and at most 3 to 5 years of imprisonment.
