Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has stepped up criticism of the country's online gambling sector, pledging to work with Congress to shut down virtual casinos.

In a speech to PT delegates on 7 March, on the eve of International Women's Day, Lula questioned the logic of allowing online casinos in a country where land-based casinos remain banned.
He particularly mentioned «Tigrinho», a popular slot featuring a tiger cub that has come to symbolise the online gambling boom in Brazil. The irony is that this game was approved as part of the 1 January 2025 betting regime, which Lula himself signed into law.
